Miracle Cure-All

Everyone here is quite sick. Nefarious spent a couple days projectile vomiting, and Rachel is in the midst of it. I felt a little off as well, so I figured I needed to cook myself a cure in the form of a bunch of vegetables on a bagel again… This one is cooked in a mix of oils and a reduction of apple cider vinegar with a ton of garlic, cayenne, habanero, and other spices.

The reason that you see spicy food in countries like India, Mexico, and other areas that are hot and have traditionally had “not the greatest sanitation” is because while the spice can pass through your body relatively harmlessly, it's strong enough to kill off a great deal of microbes (both things like influenza strains, and microbes that cause food to ferment). The effect actually gives you a sort of “internal suit of armor”, even after death — they've found that if you mix cayenne pepper in with chicken feed, the chicken meat rots far more slowly after slaughter!

So anyway, if you're concerned about your health (or a saintly internment), one of the best things you can do for yourself is condition your body to consume large quantities of spicy food.

Fresh hot sauce

I made a noodle and vegetable dish last night, but because I was cooking not just for me but for Nefarious as well I didn't want to make it too hot. She's ok with spicy food, but I think maybe not quite as ok with it as I am, so I decided to try making a fresh hot sauce on the side in sort of an Indonesian style like a sambal bajak or sambal kecap…

The morning after

I'm definitely sold on it, it was way tastier than hot relish from a jar. I blended three guajillo chiles and about a tablespoon and a half of sesame seeds in a spice/coffee grinder to make the base, with some garlic powder and a touch of brown sugar and cumin as well. To this thick powder I added fresh lime and soy sauce to bring it to a usable paste consistency. Again, really really easy to make, and a zillion combinations are possible…

It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy!

So on the whole the response was positive to the trailer, but amputation sets some people off… It's one of those “lines” that even people who claim to be into hardcore stuff sometimes have trouble seeing across. It's interesting to me because amputation is some the oldest form of human body art and ritual that we know of, and is linked to our initial development of spiritual concepts and even advanced culture. I really feel that it's almost sacrilege to deny amputation its place in this pantheon.

Anyway, not everyone agrees I guess.

go watch some sick videos

That reminds me — probably in the next few days I'll have the full length (about an hour long) Subtracting documentary uploaded to BMEvideo (which was updated this morning already), which is a long interview about body modification and amputation, as well as a procedure from start to finish.

Uvatiarru Update, August 2005

The website is currently a lot out of date, but I wanted to let people who've been asking know that the Uvatiarru movie project is still totally on the go. I have a new person coming on to help full time with BME (“what? new BME gossip!?”) in September, and once that happens I'll finally have time again to dedicate to the film and to writing (and interviewing).

As you should know, there are two old Uvatiarru trailers on the website that you can check out, and there's also an earlier “behind the scenes” trailer, some footage from the Argentina shoot, as well as two from when it was still called Cured, a trailer from when the movie was doing its BVI tour and even the very first trailer (UK filming). Today I wanted to post for you a brief teaser trailer with behind the scenes footage from Jon Cobb's filming in Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia (among other places).

I should emphasize that these are just rough cuts and have not been color corrected or worked on like they are in the final product. Please watch it fullscreen with sound turned on — the music is Joy by Circulatory System. The clip (which you can download by clicking above) is a twenty meg WMV file. You can also view some stills below.

So yes… to everyone who's persistently asking, this is still an active project!
What do you think of the trailers? (well?)

Celebrity porn

…and in the “somebody has way too much time on their hands” department, this montage of carefully editted fake celebrity porn videos is really quite brilliant in a perverted sort of way. Not that anyone who likes perverted things would ever read this wiary.
