ModCon Hardcover Book Available

Finally back in print after selling out its 2,500 copy 2002 print run, this is a new printing of the original ModCon book in its original form. This book contains photos from the first three ModCon conventions, as well as many more photos of heavy body modification, plus interviews and commentary on the subject. Some of the book is dated at this point, and I fought the urge to update it, but I feel it stands as an important marker of a wonderful time in this subculture’s history. It has however been reformatted as a 6″x9″ hardcover (a much nicer format for a book in my opinion), and expanded to 200 pages with new photos from the ModCon events.

Below are some of the pages from the hardcover book (click here to see some from the softcover). Click here to see photos of the softcover book and comparisons to the first edition so you can judge the print quality. The hardcover actually looks much better as every photo has been corrected and re-leveled but I don’t have a copy myself yet — I will post it when I do!

The book is available both as the new edition, and as a fairly direct reprint of the original.

Note: The book is out of print again due to Lulu’s printer being unwilling to print the content… So only the PDF download is available. Please, if anyone knows of an on-demand printer willing to tackle this material, let me know!!!

Sorry it’s expensive, but doing 200 pages of on-demand printing isn’t cheap… If any publishers are reading this and feel like doing a reprint, please email me.

Finally, if you’d like to see more before buying a copy, or you can’t buy one, here’s a link to a free PDF copy (lower quality images): ModConBook.pdf. If you enjoy the PDF, please do buy a copy of the book as it’s much higher quality and of course doing so supports new projects.

The markup to put it up on Amazon was too high… The price would be silly… If all else fails, you could send the book to me and I can forward it on to Australia.

I am looking forward to getting the hardback issue and now it’s no longer available to order. The softcopy is though. I hope the ‘glitch’ gets worked out soon, I just got paid today and had to wait to order.

I just received an email today saying that the printer refused to print the hardcover. “This is due to the extremely graphic nature of the content, and the printer has chosen not to print this book.” Has anyone else received this email? And why did some people get a copy before all this? WTF? CENSORSHIP!!! I am absolutely disgusted!

Glad to see that the hard cover is back up for sale. I am wondering, however, how much the book is going for? On zentastic you quote about 55$ where as on the printer’s site it’s closer to 75$.

Yeah, they seem to have upped their prices… It really seems kind of outrageous. I may just upload a better quality PDF so people can print it themselves!

    Hi Shannon.
I got your book in the post yesterday and read it in 1 day. It was really hard to put it down once you had picked it up. I would like to say that I find these peoples stories very facinating. Thank you for giving me more insight. It’s just the paper back cover as I tried and couldn’t get hold of the hardcover. Thanks again. :-)

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this in its first printing, I got the softcover version. What an awesome book, I’m so glad I got it, I would recommend it to anyone into body modifications. It truly marks an era which may be gone forever (but I hope not). I only wish I could have been a part of the book!
