Lulu Print Quality Review

Note: I am currently creating the hardcover layout. If you’re interested in this, it will be posted in a few days! I’m completely re-creating the book (so it’s the same material, but much cleaner looking) and it’s going nicely so far.

I received my copy of the ModCon book in the mail today (click there for an order link). For those that aren’t regular readers, the book is back in print via on-demand publisher Lulu. It’s essentially the same book as the original, but I wanted to make this detailed post to show the quality both for people who are interested in this book, and for those who are thinking about publishing their own books via Lulu.

In summary:

  • The paper is lighter than my original printing (both internally and in the cover), which makes the book thinner feel a little flimsier.
  • Print quality is nearly identical, although not quite as good in my opinion. But it’s very close.
  • Binding and bleed/cut accuracy and so on seems great.

I feel like the images are a little washed out, but as you can see, that was a problem in the original printing as well. This issue is corrected in the hardcover version (since that’s a completely new layout, whereas the softcover is identical), but is not in the softcover.

Comparison images below are with the first edition of the book, printed traditionally using films. B&W section was printed as such in the original, while the new one is all “color”.

Great! Can’t wait for it to come in the post.

On a completely unrelated note – the reprint had me sifting through old things. I went through the trading cards and remembered that there was no #26 or 50. Did I get a bum set all those years ago or were they just missing for everybody? Just curious.

Lulu looks great. I’ve been using Blurb to try to put together a wedding album…. I prefer some of the prefab Lulu stuff but since it’s online, and I’m on dial up… tis a no go. :(

I have a friend who is looking to print one copy of her boyfriends’ novel as a birthday present to him. After seeing your blog entries on the subject she’s gone with lulu.com also. Do you get a refferal or anything for that ;)

Wow Shannon, that's really annoying! What is it, 1997 on Geocities? Retroweb is NOT cool!
