Warm Driveways

Yay for the return of chalk season.

I'm a tattoo artist apparently

Meg was doing some research and found a quote from me in September 2007's “Art Education” magazine, which I had no idea I had been mentioned in (“Tattoos and Teenagers: An Art Educator's Perspective” by Lorrie Blair). They used me to wrap up the article, which is appreciated and I like the quote they used, but they messed up and ID'd me as a tattoo artist

The section:

For many teenagers, tattoos will serve as aides-memoires of their youth. They will make important rites of passages, indicate group membership, and declare love. Tattoo artist Shannon Larratt (2004) insists that people do their homework before getting a tattoo. This homework includes research into tattoo images and locating a professional tattoo artist. In his informative online publication for teens, he wrote:

A bad tattoo is like dirty unwashed clothes that don't quite fit right, but are stuck on you for life — or like an essay that hasn't been properly proofed for spelling and grammar ... It just doesn't communicate its message well. The effort you put into getting a high quality tattoo is a direct reflection of what you think about yourself and how much you care about yourself.

We may not be able to prevent our students from getting tattoos they may later regret, but we can help them recognize that tattoos carry multiple message and that wearing one involves social responsibility.

I also don't think BME should be characterized as a teen publication, haha… But like I said, I do like the quote they used, and definitely appreciate being used to wrap up the article. Tian from Hanzismatter and others are also quoted.

Food Production and Making Sushi

First, in relation to the entry below this one, I saw this story on how flowers are “losing” their smell, which they think might be related to the “death” of bees… IO9 has kind of a paranoid “how to survive the upcoming recession” article that I'd say is about 50% right (probably inspired quite a bit by this MeFi question and discussion).

Anyway, Nefarious and I cooked sushi today… It was quite delicious and I'm totally stuffed. We used tuna (raw), shrimp (cooked), and cucumber and avocado as filling (as well as rice and sesame and seaweed of course). Her cooking outfit is great, eh? We made brownies too; they're cooling on the counter for a snack in the morning.

Apocalyptic Movies on YouTube

I found a guy on YouTube that uploaded a bunch of full-length classic British apocalypse movies, a genre I really enjoyed as a child. The first of the bunch is the one I recommend, and is also the most accessible of the bunch. All of these are broken up into ten minute segments.

Day of the Triffids (BBC, 1981)
This is the BBC version, which is way better than the movie I think… 28 Days Later and many other fall-of-civilization zombie movies are inspired by it. The basic plot is that walking carnivorous plants take over, killing nearly everyone, after a meteorite shower (or satellite weapon gone wrong) blinds the majority of the people on the planet.

Survivors (BBS, 1975-1977)
This series, which takes place after a plague kills almost everyone on the planet, examines the idea that modern man, when stripped of society, would do worse than Iron Age man because we've completely lost the facility to take care of ourselves or create objects without the involvement of a huge industry and the involvement of hundreds of people for even the smallest item. Aparently a remake/follow-up is in the works.

No Blade of Grass (Movie, 1970)
In this movie, a virus (or human environmental pollution) wipes out all forms of grasses, leading to massive famine, followed up by disease, choas and the collapse of society (interesting, given the food wars of today).

Baaaaaaah!

So last night I was watching the two-part season starter of the new UFC reality season (which had a brutal knockout on it where the guy lay moaning incoherently for a few minutes), while Caitlin browsed videos of “fainting goats”, which have “seizures” when shocked, on her computer… This is an actual part of the night's conversation…

That's why I love her, not why I can't watch UFC with her!

Anyway, I had a surprise diminutive guest for the evening, so I'm getting my ModBlog posts up later than expected. I updated the gallery code for the tattoo auto-keywording as well today, so tomorrow when I update the main site it'll have some aliasing built in, as well as all of the content from the mini-porfolios as well (so that content will get more attention)…
