I was doing a motion test, trying to see if I could animate walking and have it look somewhat real… I think it turned out alright, although I admit that it’s a bit drunk and clumsy looking. I also ended up fiddling with filters in Photoshop afterward, which is easy to do since I output the animation as a series of still images that are then stitched together into a movie, so before that it’s simple to run a batch filter on them… So in some ways this is more of a filter test than a motion test. But yeah, I really enjoy this Wacom Bamboo tablet and am very happy that I got it.
And, woo woo, Caitlin and I are off to Vancouver for a few days, the first time I’ve been there — not counting airport stopovers — since I was four or five years old. I don’t know exactly what our plans are, but we might take a day trip to Victoria and go take a walk in the neighborhood I grew up in… There’s so much to choose from, so if anyone wants to recommend stuff — be it a nice beach or be it a great gallery or whatever — we’re all ears. Expedia gave us a great deal on a five star hotel — I suppose some sort of winter discount that they’re offering in despair after getting used to the Olympic sold-out season, wishing that they were still so full, referring those seeking a room to mangers in the stable — scenically overlooking the harbor and I sure am looking forward to taking this time out.
Hopefully the clutch issue on my car can be dealt with while we’re gone…

Try to get out in a sea kayak, if the weather is accommodating- a whole new perspective on the coast, and all torso/upper body!
I’d strongly recommend checking out the Art gallery’s Leonardo Da Vinci The Mechanics of Man exhibit. As well, the Museum of Anthropology is wonderful, and the current exhibit (Borderzones) is fascinating. Add Nitobe Gardens to the second, and you’ve got a great day. Also, the Capilano Suspension Bridge is breathtaking and offers a treetop canopy walk among the giant trees in our rainforest. And there’s also the Aquarium, Granville Island, Science World and Grouse Mountain.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
best advice I have is to not hang out in Vic. I live on the island, and stay as far away from the place as possible. To many pantless junkies, and delusional hookers for my liking… If the weather was nice enough, I’d recommend hitting up Tofino, or Sooke or something like that. Or hell, take a road trip up island and come see me in Union Bay! lol
The animation reminds me of something out the Silent Hill games, very creepy. I downloaded that pencil app but not had a chance to look over the instructions yet, will have to spend some time with it to see if I can create anything interesting.
If you’re in Victoria check out Boucherat Gallery and Regalia (one’s in Fan Tan Alley and the other is nearby) for great local artwork.
I know we’ve never met before but if you guys want to grab a dinner and drinks while you’re in Vancouver Syx and I would love it! He would love to take a portrait of you guys!
Hey Shannon,
As far as restaurants, I would recommend The foundation on Main and 7th, go for dinner and order nachos to start. The shop that Cohen tattoos at is just two blocks up on Main and Broadway if you wanna stop in and say hi. For something a little more upscale, but not totally upscale, try Grub on Main and 20 something. They have a ever-changing menu, so read the chalkboard on the wall.
In terms of nature type stuff, if the weather is nice, come out to Deep Cove in North Vancouver, which is where Cohen and I live. There are lots of nice short hikes around the cove.
I hope you have fun here.
God I miss Vancouver.
As far as eating is concerned, I recommend the Naam, my favorite restaurant of all time. And its 24 hours.

Gastown is always a nice part of Vancouver to walk around and there is a fantastic Native American art gallery there with the most awe-inspiring totems. Often times in the upstairs they actually have someone carving on-site with the proper, old fashioned tools which is amazing to watch…
I’ve commented once before I think, and check in every now and then to have a read (since I found BME years ago…)
Neat effects on the animation. The quirky walking reminds me of an animated short film I saw a while ago by Andreas Hykade. You can check out the video “Ring of Fire” on his website. Have a look, I think you’d like it! Cheers!
Nice animation. Have you considered using Adobe After Effects? It has many of the same filters as Photoshop and some different ones as well that you may enjoy.
Side notes: have you ever seen the drawing/animations of William Kentridge? Your animation reminded me of his work somewhat, at least in the mood.
Victoria has changed alot since I lived there about 15 years ago. I took a trip back a few years back with my family and we went to see our old neighborhood. We use to live on the base in Esquimalt, they have since shut the base down and the whole area was just so different.
Anyways, looking forward to hearing about your trip!
I always loved Deep Cove. Always quiet and gorgeous no matter what weather the day throws at you.
Guu is fantastic Japanese tapas, but get there when they open. It gets busy.
