I was watching the BBC series “Amazon with Bruce Parry” and in episode two he visits with the Matis tribe (“The Jaguar People”), of which only about three hundred members survive today. On them, I saw a piercing that I don’t think in all my years of doing BME I ever saw anyone do — and perhaps this is the first time I’ve even seen this piercing. It looks like sort of a high upper lip piercing, with a vertical placement — kind of like a “vertical lowbret” but for the top lip… “Vertical upbret” or something. Sadly I have lost the gallery-launching privileged of playing a role in the naimng of piercings. Shannon, have you seen Bruce Parry other series, Tribe? It’s something I’d imagine would be very up your street. He’s basically fearless when it comes to ritual drug use.
Seeing him have a life changing experience using iboga in real time is pretty amazing.

I’m watching Living With The Kombai Tribe, which I don’t think is Bruce Parry, but I’m enjoying as well. I’ll watch out for Bruce Parry’s Tribe for sure.
And yeah, he does DMT (tries to anyway) and a bunch of other stuff in this series… Not many journalists would do so!
I had a National Geographic issue which included an article about the Jaguar people, and featured a man’s face with said piercings (and the cool nostril ones) on the cover. It must have been from the early 2000s. Like many people, it played a motivational role in some of my own body modification.
This has made me want to track down the Tribe series, it was shown here a number of years ago now, I only caught a couple of episodes because it was shown quite late on school nights for me at the time. The things they showed about body modification really caught my attention, back then I knew nothing about piercing beyond my experience with a beauty salon and a piercing gun.. I remember he got his septum pierced with a thorn or something in one episode, I never imagined at the time that one day I would get the same piercing, albeit in a much cleaner environment, haha.. I guess if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be reading your blog right now.
I watched some videos on this tribe on the internet a few months back and was totally taken in by their multiple nostril piercings to “imitate” feline whiskers. It’s refreshing to see modifications that are totally different from all that we are used to.
Kinda looks like the “nick” piercing you documented a few years back.
