On the bright side of this vacation getting canceled fiasco, we’ve been having fun here, and eating lots of good food. Yesterday we had lunch at Whole Food’s awesome salad bar, and today Caitlin cooked a feast including vegetarian cabbage rolls (which I think we’re actually eating tomorrow) and some kind of mussel pasta that I’m eagerly awaiting as I write this. I also ate a whole cherry pie all by myself over the last couple days, but that is not particularly unusual.
Yesterday’s date to Avatar, which we saw in “Digital 3D” (rather than Imax 3D), was incredible. It took my eyes about fifteen minutes to adjust to the 3D and at first I dreaded a headache, but wow, I sure do recommend going to see it in the best theatre you can. I’ve never seen a CGI movie like this — it’s so incredibly complete and realistic and immersive — no uncanny valley here — and I just can’t imagine the amount of time that went into doing all the art and modeling for the project. I was totally blown away by the movie on every level, but most of all technically. I’m a fan of Cameron’s movies in general, but he really hit this one out of the ballpark. I won’t give away too much of the story, but one of the themes of the movie is the interconnectedness of all life, and that being the theme of my forehead/skull tattoo, I definitely appreciated that plot — which he managed to do without being at all cheezy or new-age.
In the “not so satisfied” category of media enjoyment, boooooo to the finale of Survivor. What the hell were they thinking with their pathetic vote?!?! Russell in my opinion is quite likely the best player in the history of the game, and he deserved to win. The fact that they went with someone who got there only by following him around is bizarre to me — and unpredicable as well, given that when a disliked but great gameplayer makes it to the end in reality shows, they almost always get a “I hated you, but you played a great game” vote from everyone. So I was very surprised, and I shared some kinship with the tears in Russell’s eyes.
So, making the most of being here in Canada — appropriately we just watched the überpatriotic freedom-touting 2005 documetary Escape to Canada again… I had a doctor’s appointment today, and tomorrow morning I go in to the hospital for a CT scan on, I assume, my legs and perhaps arms and more, and then after that they’re doing some sort of ultrasound on my heart to see how long I have to live — hopefully my heart is completely unaffected by the Muscular Dystrophy, assuming that diagnosis continues to stick… It wouldn’t be the first time one didn’t stick, so don’t hold your breath. I’ll see about getting copies of the scans and seeing if I can make a Youtube video like I did with the very first scan I got.
Edit: It was clams, and it was delicious!

Mmm! That looks DELICIOUS! I always find brightly coloured things appetizing.
I don’t normally put grape tomatoes in it but there they were, in the fridge, begging to be eaten up so I did. It’s the easiest recipe-one of my old stand-bys. Love it.
I WAS SOOOOOOO MAD that he didnt win! I just could NOT believe it. I expected him to win the entire, ENTIRE season, he was amazing and made this entire season worth watching.
love the write-up. :)
this is why bme will be dead in 2 years – no doubt you’ve seen their thinly veiled avatar ‘review’ where they try to convince us it’s news worthy for bme cos the characters have a stretched earlobe. *rolls eyes*
what they gonna pull out next? scans of wallpaper swatches that vaguely resemble tribal tattooing?
i admit it’s funny how most of the sheep who post comments at bme actually buy those posts and go along with it, but between all that weak rubbish from ‘she-who-must-be-obeyed’ and their recent introduction of 19 year old article posters who can barely string a few soul-less words together it is genuinely distressing to observe the death throes of what was once such an amazing site and community. :(
your blog here is the only one i read and it’s anazing stuff, but please re-assure us that you’ll be returning to bodymod writing once the gagging order is over with? those punk kids that’re new to bme might not have experienced the glory days of bme but for those who remember fondly the shannon era and the amazing content and insight he provided there will be a void until our man larratt is back in the saddle! :)
oh, and thesquirming caused the the bme staff over the ‘nazi tattoo’ debacle has been hilarious *muahaha*
respect to you and nefarious shannon.
Thanks :)
I wasn’t sure about that Nazi tattoo entry when they were editing the entry and things kept changing — I thought they were going to bomb handling it — but in the end I actually think that the situation was handled right. For the last year I thought ModBlog and BME were spiralling downhill in the worst way, but, with the exception of a few people who I really can’t stand, the last few weeks have actually been a huge improvement and it’s the first time since I left that I actually feel like there is some potential of things turning around. We’ll see.
When 2012 comes around again I am 100% sure that I will write about BodMod again in some capacity. I don’t know if it’ll be a full-fledged site, or if that’s something I even want to do (after all, I have a pretty blessed life right now), but there are many days I find myself wanting to write on the subject in detail, or where I want to interview someone, or when I see posts on other blogs that have so much ignorance on the subject that it drives me bonkers… I hate seeing authors who write about tattoos or suspension or whatever that have such holes in their knowledge of the subject that really ridiculous crap gets posted. And like you said, there is also the issue of some of the posters not knowing what is appropriate for posting. And finally, yes, some of the sheep are ridiculous. But perhaps that has always been true, and on all sites, not just on BME.
“So yesterday, I went cruising the BME tattoo galleries looking for potential Modblog features.”
to actually begin a post with something that is blatantly obvious to all and sundry as being the ‘meat and bones’ of supplying modblog with posts is surely a step in the wrong direction?
