While I was in Costa Rica, we ordered a bunch of coloured contacts. Caitlin got two black and one white, and I got a pair of “angelic” (light cyan), “darth” (yellow with a fiery red halo), and a white pair as well, all in my prescription. In the picture below I’ve got in the “angelic” ones, and Caitlin of course is wearing a single black one. They look much better in real life than in the picture. Tomorrow I’ll wear the red ones, and I can’t wait to see how they look. It was fun coming home to some cool stuff waiting in the mail, and we went out this morning on a shopping expidition and picked up a nice winter outfit (boots, jacket, mitts) for Nefarious, and one for Caitlin too, and an Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 — with a four year warranty, which I normally don’t bother with but makes sense here — to replace the one I broke.

I was just looking at the discount trip sites, and I found tons of great vacation packages at insane discounts — $250 for all-inclusive week long Caribbean vacations including airfare… again: for $250. WTF. How is that even possible? Seriously, I could just go on vacations non-stop and my life would be cheaper. Something I must consider!
In sadder, more embarrassing news, I have lice and also picked up lice shampoo this morning. It’s been getting passed around by all the kids and seems to never go away. I am sad about it because I have not shampooed my hair since last December — in a quest for hair health, not for general hobo chic — and was hoping to make it a full year. I did rinse it and condition it — just no shampoo. So close…
Other than that, it’s raining today, and the Toronto zombie walk is tomorrow… Rain is about the worst thing for a make-up heavy event like that, but I was very relieved to see that the forecast is quite good. I can’t wait, and will probably start working on my outfit today, building a better head-cage for the same “captive zombie” thing we did last time. I’ll post pictures tomorrow evening of course.

I got them at Clearly Contacts (a Canadian site) — here’s their Halloween contacts. All the ones I got were cheapos, but I might spring for nicer ones in the future.
why do you condition your hair? My oldest has been no-poo since May (he’s 12 and has long hair) and just uses water on it. He was hoping for dreads but our nordic heritage prevents that without constant fussing.
Shannon, I just got the tough-8000 a few weeks ago, its a pretty great camera. Also, I am also going to be snorkeling at a “top-ten” site this April in Hawaii at Kealekekua Bay.

Everyone with kids has been through lice. Here’s what works far better than the medications and even takes care of the nits. Smear mayonaise all over head and hair to complete saturation then wrap in saran wrap and keep on overnight. Washout. That’s it.

Yeah, totally. No seriously, look it up. Try the dangerous stuff first, what the heck, it doesnt work unless you are able to remove every single nit. The vinegar in the mayo breaks down the nits as well as the “glue” that they use to attach to hair. The mayo keeps it on there long enough, the wrap suffocates. Seriously, I went through it more than a decade ago when Lauren was in 1st grade and by the time my MIL found this on the internet I was VERY grateful to look so silly for a night.

also…every time i look online i find insane vacation deals to the caribbean. whenever i’m in cuba, i hear stories of retired people who literally at a 3 star resort all winter and its cheaper than being home. awww to retire!

mayo is gross, but it is SUPER hydrating for your hair
that said, if you are no poo, i have no idea how you would get the mayo OUT
I have very fine not-dry hair so I cant begin to understand “no poo” as shampoo is absolutely needed for me. If I dont shampoo at least every week my hair follicles actually hurt. *shrug*
Our preferred method over here in NZ is to slather your hair with conditioner (any type,cheap is fine and white is easier to see the lice) which stuns the lice for 20mins. So you then use a fine-toothed nit-comb and you or someone else carefully combs out the lice/nits, wiping on a towel so you can see them. You repeat every three days for about a week (to catch any that you have missed, the eggs hatch in 3 days). Avoids all chemical nasties and really does work.
Ok, I will be the odd-ball here with a chemical suggestion for lice. Under the brand name Sergeant’s – Skip-Flea and Tick shampoo for cats really works. I know it’s for cats but when my daughter who has very thick hair got lice it got rid of them and all she did was shampoo with it every day for 2 weeks. It leaves hair conditioned and detangled, doesn’t burn the skin, you leave it on 5 mintues and wash them out and we didn’t pick the nits out they just went away by themselves. I know it’s not wha you may want to try if you are going nopoo but we’ve been pleased with the results.
Oh, and mayo is great for dry hair!!
Also only required one treatment and the nits easily combed right out since they were no longer attached.

I’m sorry you got lice, it works out kind of obligatory if you’re round young uns. It’s always worth chopping it all off and starting again… nothing lasts, but nothing is lost :)
Hmm. I’d try the mayo thing, maybe. But I’d check that out first. Sounds, um…. less than pleasant. Regardless, you could try using apple cider vinegar, a towel and a wrap of some kind overnight. If the vinegar is supposed to work to get rid of the lice, then perhaps straight vinegar will work, as well. Not to mention, a lot of no-poo methods for shampooing your hair use apple cider vinegar and baking soda. So you could just add the baking soda to a little more vinegar in the morning and “shampoo” your hair to get it out, then rinse. It would be worth a shot, anyway. I’m sure there has to be more natural, non-chemical, non-shampoo methods out there for lice. If you’re willing to try them.
I really like the contacts. Makes me wish I could wear contacts. I’ve tried and tried but can’t seem to find any that are weighted properly to stay on my eyes. I have a pretty severe astigmatism. But they really look great.
Also, glad to hear the trip was a success, minus the camera and glasses issues. I always enjoy reading about your trips and adventures..
