I got this nice big order of bugs and creepy creatures to eat from Edible — their prices are high, with their only real competitor in insect eating that I know of being Thailand Unique, but their service is very fast and to my surprise I received my order within a week of placing it. I also got some scorpions, some chocolate covered, and some that I will use in a stir fry… I don’t know if scorpions are a “bug” or not. The ants are nice too, and I used what I learned to update the Wiki page on Atta with a note on the flavor. I ate most of it myself, with a couple presents for friends and family. Nefarious’s cousins told me that they’d recently fried up some ants, so I will see if they are brave enough to eat the tarantula — the instructions suggest that they legs are yummy, but tell you to wash down the body with an ice cold beer, so I have my suspicions that it’s an acquired taste. Acquired by extreme poverty and necessity, that is.

Interesting. I’ve always wondered how different each insect tastes and if where they live affects that. Scorpions are arachnids so they’re like spiders instead of insects but lots of people call them bugs anyway. I hope you’ll post pictures of the scorpion stir-fry!
We’re really curious as to how expensive this was? I mean, are bugs economical to eat?
As a Scorpio, I tried to learn a little bit about scorpions. I’d be curious about eating scorpions, since I’d imagine that the stinger and the venom sac would (I’d think) need to be removed prior to cooking/eating because of its toxic nature.
You have to update us on how the scorpions turned out. My boyfriend won’t stop talking about how he wants to try eating them, but I’m not sure they would make it through US customs.
Bizarre foods guy say’s roasted grasshopper taste like lobster meets crab.
But ew.
My dad has eaten scorpion many times in China or Japan. The poison in their stingers is NOT toxic if eaten, and most scorpions only have a poison similar to a bee sting. Though he did say his lips would start to tingle if he ate a lot of them. They were served fried like a snack.
Very cool!
I was wondering if you had any problems with customs or what? Did you use DHL Delivery? I have been curious about this site for quite some time and and kind of relieved to be able to ask someone about how their order went.
I live in the US, and just ordered several things from Edible. I’ll let you know how it goes with shipping/customs, but the (minimal) asking around I’ve done leads me to believe that I shouldn’t have any problems.
