Cleanliness at hospitals is not as good as tattoo shops

I had a consultation today for a surgery that’s happening in mid-August, adding another nice hefty scar to my legs. I’m happy that they’ve got me in so quickly, and it shouldn’t be a big deal and I won’t be out of commission long. I said to the doctor, “just don’t do use that hyfrecator over there, because it seems to be covered in blood.” Here’s a picture. Oops.

*cringe/wince/gag* That makes me feel very secure about my upcoming surgery… I hope yours goes well, and involves alert doctors & staff with better eyesight than whoever is in charge of this room! That tool itself is positively medieval in appearance, but the blood just adds that finishing touch.

    That is just dreadful..

Id say if you said to the doctor that the standard of cleanliness in tattoo shops is much higher than the standard in hospitals he’d be shocked too.

  12. One time I went to the doctor’s office and was shown to an exam room. I sat down and looked to right. Lucky me, there was a wheeled tray with a speculum covered with blood and lube. Nasty.

There was a “autoclaving not being done” scandal at one of the Toronto hospitals a while back and it was made much grosser because it was the tools were all anal speculums or colonoscopy tools or something anally-related like that…

Wasn’t that at Lakeridge Health Oshawa? My then-roommate was one of the lucky ones to get a call-back after that fiasco. Then again, it wouldn’t shock me if it happened at more than one hospital.

they even make barrier film sleeves to put over the handles of hyfrecators, i use them.

and from what i’ve seen and heard hospitols and dentists offices don’t get inspected by the health department, i don’t doubt that they don’t get inspected at all. i’ve also heard that the few that do get inspected get told that they will be inspected about a week or more before their inspection.

BTW, the state health department is asking me to go back to doing inspections for them again (i’m dropping my state board position).
