After getting Nefarious settled in summer camp I headed down to the airport (bumping into Rick Mercer on the ferry) and went flying… I’m working on getting my pilot’s license finished off quickly this summer. A friend of mine flies for relief organizations in Africa and I figure it can’t hurt to open up my options to finish off my training.

Do you have any issues with the medical check part of the license?
None of my health issues would affect the medical check required for the license to the best of my knowledge.
I love nothing more than someone always expanding horizons.
I think any health issues would only be a concern if you wanted to fly for the military.
What kind of plane are you flying in for your lessons? I was up at Buttonville last weekend doing a bit of nerdy business and saw that they’re charging $80/hr but also noticed that Seneca runs a course there.
I’d love to learn to pilot a plane as I love flying but hate taking off and landing. Learning to do it myself would likely quell my fears, or at least one-up my brother who is a licensed visual pilot.
I fly a Cessna 172… $80 an hour is an amazing price for flight instruction on any plane.
Taking off is easy and not scary. Landing is a little more scary the first few times (probably the only scary thing if you’re landing with turbulence or unfavourable wind conditions), but you’ll do some many touch-and-goes with your instructor on board that it’ll be second nature before you’re expected to do it solo.
Shannon,
I’ve started lessons myself, and find the el-cheapo headset provided by the club causes pain when worn with my sunglasses for anything longer than about 30 mins.
What model DCs are you wearing in the picture, and how do you find them with wearing glasses?
Cheers,
Once you have your licence, try helicopters. Learning to fly one was by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever done — but immensly satisfying once you manage it.
Glad to see you are back at it. Once I finish school and start work I think I’m going to take lessons down here at the Niagara District Airport…
Man I want to learn how to fly. Then I could do some amazing photographic tours. I’d buy a 4 seater with floats and wheels so I could land anywhere. Some of the remote communities and stories you could come back with would be amazing.

You should — I think you’d be a great pilot. You definitely have what it takes.
