Our Artifacts

Reading Metafilter this morning, I came across this beautiful gallery of WWII bunkers.

Something about them reminds me of places like Angkor Wat — eternal objects created by humanity that rise up through the nature that has tried to reclaim its space.

In a moment of synchronicity, Someone sent me this photo of an Astra GT kit car in a similar state of decay-slash-suspended-preservation.

Synchronicity indeed. I was just showing my aunt some pictures of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia and comparing it to Angkor Wat before I logged on here. I visited the Angkor temple complex a few years ago. It’s the most amazing place. Spent 4 days bicyling round it and there was still plenty left unseen. It is still used by plenty of people every day. People still live there. I took a walk round Battersea Power Station a few months ago. It is the same sort of place, immense and unused. The roof is gone, and it has birds and an amazing open feeling to it. It just needs trees. It has been deemed a hazard to the public, and will eventually be turned in to a shopping centre.

That first one looks more like the crashed remains of some imperial space ship to me.

I agree with wlfdrgn, I felt as though the creators of StarCraft must have borrowed inspiration from such images.

Wow Shannon, that's really annoying! What is it, 1997 on Geocities? Retroweb is NOT cool!
