It was hard to get a photo of how the work is going on this painting because, well, it’s night time and this apartment does not have good lighting. We’re considering moving — a nice 3,000 square foot art studio with a garage door just opened up that we’re thinking seriously about taking. It would be an amazing space for us all (it’s got three apartments and about 20 foot ceilings) — with Caitlin’s welding skills we could build hot rods! Woo woo!

I’m normally really not a fan of your art or your style, Shannon, but I like this very much. It carries something deep and honest and moving… good work, despite the photo/lighting issues!
disclaimer: I have 2 degrees in art history and normally I shut up about what I don’t like, but when I like something, I feel the need to say so.
that studio sounds like a dream. that would be incredible.
my 71 karmann ghia needs some welding. get the studio space and i’ll be yer first paying customer :) next project would be dropping a porsche engine in.
I dig the Mystic’s eyes.
That space sounds to die for… if you do get in I demand photos!
sounds like an awesome space, best of luck with that!
on a side note, i always wonder about how artists feel about people using thier work for tattoos.
as someone who understands both, whats your take on it?
would you want some $$ for it, or just to be asked for permission? or just happy that someone liked your style/work so much they etched it into thier flesh?
I would be thrilled if someone used any of my art in a tattoo. I would never ask for any money — I personally consider tattoo art inside fair use. The only exception might be if someone made flash or otherwise profited from it other than the act of doing the tattoo.
I know some artists get pissed off when you get a BAD tattoo artist to do a BAD rendition of their art, but that’s a separate issue.
Is the mystic hole-tempting? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3X7op57kH0)
my first 3 tattoos are your drawings from back in the day. think of you often when i look at em!
peted3 – my second tattoo was an album cover I liked. after I got it I emailed a picture to the band thinking they’d get a kick out of it. they did not. they were really upset. I did calm them down and managed to get them to understand that it’s a compliment, not theft and so it’s fine now.
I’m not sure it’s completely necessary to get permission before you tattoo, but yeah some people may not appreciate it. of course, my story is from way back in 2000 and things might have changed a bit these days….
That’s totally crazy! I would be so flattered… I don’t know why a band would get pissed off about something like that.
ha, yeah I was floored. it was this image that caused all the fuss. I wonder if they’d like an update on the additions by Craig Driscoll a few years later? hm.
but yeah, their argument was that they’d put lots of effort in to sketching it out, and they just felt it was theft. I think they had just never imagined anyone would take it for anything…. and to their credit, it took only one email for me to explain to them that this is a GOOD thing. ah well.
