Abalone and Brussels Sprouts

Went to the Science Centre today and on the way back picked up a new game… Abalone… So after supper we played that for a while. Other than that, Nefarious’s current favorite vegetable (with me in general agreement) is Brussels sprouts, so I’ve been cooking lots of them lately. For lunch we had a real simple meal of them cooked in garlic butter and rice. Takes only a few minutes and is completely delicious… I don’t know why Brussels sprouts are always on lists of hated childhood vegetables — everyone that I know loves them.

I think they’re delicious as well, but that wasn’t my opinion at all as a child. I’ve since learned that this is because lots of people, including my parents, tend to overcook them which makes eating brussels sprouts a much less pleasing experience. The same is often true for asparagus as well.

Overcooked vegetables in general are terrible, but asparagus definitely gets wrecked easily!

i’d have to agree. i used to hate most veggies until i’d had them properly cooked. i love brussels sprouts now. i actually had them once at a bobby flay’s mesa grill in las vegas, with walnuts and a cranberry glaze. absolutely wonderful. you should try that sometime, at least if nefarious’ brussel sprout binge continues. something new. anyway. that games looks super fun. i’m going to try to convince my husband to play with me. and i think i’m going to have to try the garlic butter and rice with brussels sometime. thanks. :)

If you want another different and yummy way to have brussel sprouts, try roasting them with a little bit of salt and pepper, olive oil, and apple cider vinegar. Really good. And they are such a great vegetable. It’s so nice to see someone who feeds their family something other than the usual western crap

I love brussel sprouts — especially when they are a bit overcooked – since it makes them VERY soft and tender.

    Angela,
I always thought that cauliflower looked like “little brains” :)
My fav veggies are brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet peas, and fried squash. :)

mmmmmmmmmm butter, sopped up best when the little heads are thrown into the food processor before cooking. Seriously decadently delicious. I have no favorite vegetables, I’d eat nothing but bloody steak if I could but have found small red potatoes to be delicious raw with a touch of olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. All vitamins and minerals intact and quite tasty. Since I am not a huge fan of eating, it’s best that I eat raw when possible. Well, that’s of course best for anyone. I wonder if raw brussel sprouts could be made into a cole slaw of sorts and mean to try. Yeah! :D

  13. Brussel sprout cole slaw. mmmmmm.

I can remember physically gagging on them. Now I prefer them. Must be fresh though. Those frozen ones are disgusting.

If you’re looking for new games to play I’d suggest trying Go. The rules are pretty simple, but the game ends up actually being more complex than chess while still being easier to learn.

I used to absolutely hate brussel sprouts as a child, when I was forced to eat them horribly boiled and overcooked for several days in a row, but ever since discovering roasting them, I am completely in love with them! Especially the little crispy leaves on the outside, mmmmm, yum.
Kale chips are kind of like those delectable crispy bits. Toss some kale pieces with a little oil and seasoning, spread out on a pan, roast till nice and crisy, stirring them a couple times, and oooo, those suckers are addictive!

The reason cauliflower ect, looks like brains is because the structure is the most efficient at distributing nutrients. Bam!
