Sterling Kit Car Bought!

Time to do a bit more packing, and then another afternoon of swimming. We got diving darts — darts with propellers on the end so they slowly helicopter to the bottom. It’s pretty fun tossing them from end to end of the pool. Nefarious did her first dives — cannonballs — yesterday and has been bugging me to get her a snorkel, but I told her she has to be a better swimmer before I do that, because I know it’ll just mean lungfulls of water as she sinks under the surface.

And… Woo woo! The price was right so I bought that Sterling project car today. There are more pictures on my other site if you’re interested. It’s going to be a fair bit of work to finish, but I’m really thrilled about this car and am committed to doing a good job with it.

  1. There’s room to bolt a car seat to the roof! Ugh, it’s got those Pontiac Firebird rims. With those, all you’ll need next is the baby moon black centers and the swishing red LED array. What king of rims would be proper for that car?

I’m not sure — something suitably dated though… I want to keep its 70s look.

A car seat will fit in the passenger seat, but that means that it’s one girl only! Caitlin or Nefarious… One for rides to school, one for dates.

  3. One of my family friends had a Manta or something closely resembling it.
(he also owned a real porsche RSK Spyder that he sold for $50K!?!?)

    So some Shelby 5 Slots?

  5. Somehow, moving from civilization to rural life makes me less interested in muscle cars. Now if you put a diesel in it and ran it off old bacon grease…..

Actually, I’m going to be putting on my inspector Clouseau outfit to drive around in one of these death traps: https://zapcars.com/xebra-electric-truck

This isn’t a muscle car — it gets 40+ mpg.

She’s awesome in the water — within a week she’s taught herself to swim… She swims under water with me with the deal that when she starts to blow out air I help her come up if she can’t on her own (she can now but couldn’t at first). She can swim about half way across the pool, and can dive and touch the bottom with her hands… New skills daily!

  10. Sorry. Maybe looking at the V-8 in that Manta confused me.

I’ve always been turned off by the wide mating surfaces that I see in Kit car door areas. Maybe in the case of your car, this functions as some sort of
    step.

What is the top speed of the Sterling?

    Is the door/roof/windsheild manually/electrically raised?

Yeah, it’s pure VW 4-cylinder in this one — nothing like the performance/power in the Manta. They can be converted to run on alcohol (so I could have a still and make my own fuel), or even run on steam, but they’re a very nice engine as is.

The width of the door sill is in part a design issue because of the shape of the car, but it also makes getting into a low car much easier. You sort of sit down on the sill, flip your legs over the side, and then slide in/out.

This car is not built for top speed, so it’s a pretty normal car in that area, but it’s quite peppy because it’s very light.

The door/roof is operated by a hydraulic pump (but can be manually opened as well).

  12. The Flat four (boxer) is such a dynamic engine. There are so many aftermarket things for it, you can’t go wrong! That and the production run was so long on VW, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding parts.
