Police State

Admittedly Critical Mass can be a little obnoxious, but even as someone who rarely bikes and almost always drives a jacked up truck, the antithesis of a bike, in general I support their message. This video (via bb) is a little long and self-righteous as well, but no matter what you think of Critical Mass it very much underscores the reality that the police are extremely willing to lie and fabricate evidence and statements in order to get their way, and are very afraid of citizen surveillance because it stops their ability to perpetrate false arrest and generally facilitate a culture of fascism.

I’d love to understand the psychology of what transpired. Both the police officers and the civilians- I recall in incident recently where some kids were taunting a tiger in San Francisco. Normally the tiger couldn’t get anywhere near the zoo visitors. The individuals taunted the tiger to a point that it finally escaped and mauled one of them to death. I don’t condone police violence at all. I understand it. If you want to get harassed by the police, there is no better way to get this done than to harass them first. That whole Critical Mass thing is ridiculously inconsiderate. Especially in a downtown congested environment. Just because you can do something like that doesn’t make it right.

I understand that in a high stress situation sometimes police overreact, and while I think it’s bad, I’m a lot more concerned about the cover-up afterwards (filing false statements, etc), because that speaks to a culture of fascism.

Church covers up molestations by moving the priests. Cops lose their tempers and pull people off bikes and then pin a whole bunch of stuff on the “victim”. I consulted for an attorney once who was prosecuting a wrongful death. He very bluntly said something along the lines of ” Throw all the shit against the wall.. something *will* stick…”
My dad used to use a belt on me. Made me think real hard about the actions I took later. Some folks might decide f-ing with cops is like f-ing with tigers. F-ing with anyone long enough and you will get mauled… I’m not too sure how many people I could have watching me and filming me without my permission while I am doing my job… Waiting for me to f-up before I popped. Of course cops are supposed to be professionals so nothing like this should evvvverrrr happen?

So you’ve never lied to cover up some transgression you’ve made?

I don’t think the Chief of Police or the Mayor issued orders to pull people off of bikes and handcuff them. I suppose dismissing this behaviour could be construed as sanctioning it. Cops lie, Website designers lie, engineers lie, Presidents lie. etc, etc, etc,…

Yeah, Watching that video. It was like watching the cops in Tuscaloosa or Birmingham siccing dogs on Black folks and beating them with billy clubs or blasting them with firehoses and Teargas. Facists… they’re like cicadas they come out every 17 years…..or so…..

Next thing you’ll see those New York Cops doing is stuffing folks in gas chambers.

Wow, everyone involved handled that one pretty badly. I wish The Mist would come and take us all away.

ya, the police filing false reports is TOTALLY OK. I mean, I totally understand why they file false reports and charge people with felonies for walking on the sidewalk…they are just working the system in order to take this bike-riding trash off the streets.
