Because the temperature just dropped and the first snow storm of the year happened today we rushed the balcony plants into the house, making this place even more insanely cluttered than usual. It’s not that it’s dirty or anything — I do the dishes and all that — but there are always so many projects on the go that it’s a literal maze of wonders. I think even if I had an aircraft hanger-sized space to work in I could very quickly fill it up. I hope to have a little more time to work on it this weekend but I’ve started filling in the background on Cold Water Extraction (which really needs a less mundane title I think) and am opting for a bright and garish theme.
I’ll also mention that The Toronto Winter Swim Club is back in action for it’s second season. We went yesterday and it was wonderful, and will be swimming again on Saturday November 24th at 2PM 6:30PM at Cherry Beach. Anyone who’d like to join us is very welcome. It’s enormous fun. To paraphrase the Russian philosopher Porphiri Ivanov, I agree that the main reason that humans live in a constant state of sickness, both mentally and physically, is that we wall ourselves off from that which keeps us healthy. By living in exile in isolated and controlled environments, away from nature in unhealthy little cocoons, we are unable to exist as functional members of the larger ecosystem of which we are intended to be a part, and can not face our role in the universe. Winter swimming is an excellent first step in immersing oneself in the reality of being truly alive.

I really do love your art. I wish I could go swimming with you all aswell, shame I am so far away!
x
I would maybe like to join you for swimming, but I need to be outfitted with winter swimwear. I mean shoes and stuff. Is there time for me to get that before the plunge?
Great pics! Winter swimming would be so fun! (I couldn’t participate cuz I have this weird freaky disorder called “cold urticaria” which is just a fancy way of saying I get hives when I’m cold. Yeah, it sounds fake, but unfortunately its not… sucks cuz I can’t play outside with my kids – or do fun other things like swimming in freezing cold water lol!)
Your painting room is awesome – creativity at work is always messy… If its neat, it can’t be creative lol!!!
I wanted to go swimming in Lake Michigan yesterday since it was the first snowfall in Chicago, but the waves were atrocious. I hate to break down and go to the Russian men’s spa to use their ice pool if I have a perfectly good freezing lake a mile from my apartment.
I love the title of the painting, I don’t think you should change it at all.
So says the freelance pharmacologist. ;)
Well, *ahem* I wasn’t about to bring THAT up. ;)
i would *totally* love to go tomorrow, but i’ll be in NYC for work. next time though!! i’ve envied the winter swimming since it started!!
To accommodate a few people I’ve changed the time of the swim to 6.30pm.
Sorry to be a nuisance :)
Daytime swimming times are better for those of us who don’t have cars and have to take the TTC back to civilization!
wintermute – Daytime as in, early evening?
I’ll give this to you- you’ve got balls. I’ll leavethe winter swimming to you for now ^^
Also, your paintings and gorgeous,as is your daughter.
Shannon, I imaine you already know this – but some plants are good to have inside because they remove harmful items from the air. For example, a pothos plant removes benzine from the air (and the plant is able to be rown in dirt as well as only in water).
daytime as in, when it’s light. (i’m a grad student, working hours have no meaning for me) but if i do show up again (working on reluctant friends) I’ll take a cap back next time. Walking to the streetcar line last year was a little silly.
therefore, the dark would be ok if we are taking a cab.
Sad that germany is so far away. I did simmming in a lake here in bavaria all year round two years ago. Sometimes i had a axe with me to make a hole in the ice to get into the water. I`ve nerver been sick in that year. One time i made pics, if i can find them, i will e mail them to you
To comment the first pic… it seems to me like a wonderful environment for your little girl to grow up. So colorful and creative.
Always good to read about swimming, my ex was an olympic swimmer..
Can I ask though – how did you get this picked up and into google news?
Very impressive, is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?
Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..
