Death Comforts You IV

So part of me — luckily a very small part of me that doesn’t listen to instructions very well — is saying that I shouldn’t post any more of my paintings, because their content (along with the content of other artwork) is being used against me in legal proceedings to make the case that I’m [insert inaccurate crazy/violent person term here]… I really found the idea of using someone’s art to demonize them extremely disquieting and frankly offensive. What’s next? My goofy little kid’s limericks are going to be used as evidence as something more dastardly than the fact that I have little sense for rhythm in a rhyme scheme?

On that note, work’s moving ahead nicely on the potentially damning Death Comforts You… It looks better in the picture to be honest than in real life, which I’ll remedy soon with a few minor touch ups, after which I’ll do a topcoat and build a frame… I’m motivated to get this one done quickly because it’s already spoken for and I need to make some money to go Christmas shopping! The frame is going to be a deep red frame covered with little cartoon skulls. I actually have a few frames to build right now (Tikikaiju and Rookaiju are both unframed).

While it is perhaphs not the most pleasant scene, it’s completely understandable, given the circumstances. I’m really sorry for everyone personally involved. I hope against hope that your amazing daughter can continue on her path, I know she must love both parents and I hope that for her, all can “get along”. It can never be too late, she’s just a little girl.

Better to make art than let emotions fester.

The painting is looking amazing! Its pretty sad when you have to be worried about posting pictures of your art, because someone can use it in court against you. Thats just so lame! Best of wishes Shannon!

that is completely ridiculous that your artwork is being used against you. everything you’ve ever created (and I mean everything–from your paintings, drawings, websites, to your daughter, etc) is beautiful and an expression of yourself (not to say they reflect any type of insanity/violence).

This painting, despite its contents, is gorgeous. I love the colors and the idea for the frame. Keep creating, Shannon.

  6. Fo’ SHO’ing: If you’d like to show I would recommend putting your complete portfolio on a site that is dedicated to it. When submitting or proposing to a gallery a little “Free press” packet is good; a CD with your portfolio, a business card, your website listed and your artist statement and later as you gain shows – your CV. Each large city usually has a gallery guide available. I would recommend trying independent spaces first (they are usually more welcoming) and any galleries that boast supporting emergent artists. There are art community sites where you can post your work and link to your website… like https://www.fecalface.com (a favorite of mine for graffiti and illustrator based artists- as your work seems to apply), another option is to join an artist co-op although I find the fees to be too expensive for emerging artists. https://www.nexusphiladelphia.org/ Has a packet that they’ve compiled of all the galleries in Philadelphia but MORE importantly HOW to contact galleries, what to say and how best to represent yourself which you can find at their site or request a PDF version from them. Also another good site which keeps up with current Art with a big ‘A’ is https://www.artkrush.com they also have multiple links to other art media and update often. Enjoy, good luck and thanks for your work.-Sara

If you walked around with a crucifix around your neck, would they attempt to portray that as some sort of torture fetish? (crazy/insane/etc.)

It had occurred to me the other day while viewing the suicide reptile image, that the themes of your artwork could be used to judge your state of mind.

Kids have been expelled from school for drawing guns.

    Or depicting acts of violence.

on one hand, it’s horrible that they’re pulling this kind of thing. on the other, if they are using your artwork to paint you as a psycho (no pun intended), it is fairly apparent that they are grasping at straws.

i’d hope that scienkoptic’s comment can’t apply to you, being an adult and where there is overwhelming evidence to contradict your alleged insanity.

Well, if they have to dig that deep at a chance to prove you are “crazy” than they don’t have much of a case. I hope this is over soon.

I dig your paintings a lot. What does it for me is the facial expressions of the subjects.

People’s careers and lives have been ruined and ended by making comments/statements that are unpopular or non-pc.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

The reality is that people judge/make judgments.
It’s a human thing. It’s part of how we evolved.

To deny that humans make judgments based on observations is naive and delusional.

I do like the artwork. I just wonder what value it is to post the image during a period of your life when you are being judged?

Mothers have drowned their kids in bathtubs, hung them up by nooses in their closets or bashed their brains in with rocks.

After the carnage, all the wise folks say: ” there were all the signs that this would happen, why didn’t anyone do anything?”
    “why did no one act?”

Sorry to hear that Shannon. I had been reading Zentastic for months, and your artwork is probably the least offensive thing! I really like it.

And as far as being crazy, isn’t there a “Chica Loca” who had been racing a Lotus somewhere that should really be considered the crazy one for risking her life racing when she should be a mother to her child… whoops that sounds really judgemental… good luck with everything.

The only really threatening painting I can find is the one here at the bottom: https://www.ineedmorelife.com/blog/2007/11/08/death-comforts-you-ii/ I’m not a lawyer or anything but painting dripping blood-red “We will bury you” text over the person you’re in a legal battle with and then displaying that publicly could probably be interpreted in a negative way, that has nothing to do with artistic freedoms

    C. Silk – That’s not what it says and I think that you know that perfectly well if you bothered to read the entry that was linked for your benefit. It’s a reference to the classic Marxist saying that the proletariat is the undertaker of capitalism — the idea that a community can not be oppressed for financial gain.
