As well as our small kite, all the kitesurfers were out at the beach today — about a dozen of them plus that again on windsurfers were racing across Cherry Beach. There are a lot of amazing things in this world that we take for granted, and the wind is one of my favorites. How many oxen on ropes does it take to budge the oak tree that the wind effortlessly rips from the earth? How static would the world be were it not for the wind? But still, especially in the period of my life I’m going through right now, I think of Winston Churchill’s observation that “kites rise highest against the wind, not with it,” and welcome the wind in my life — as cold and bitter as it may be — that brings much needed change.

Beautiful.
Is kitesurfing the same as windboarding?
Kitesurfing uses a huge kite, you are the connection between board and kite, windboarding uses a board with a sail. :-)
Thank you!
Never seen kitesurfing before.
Love the new picture to the left. You look calm and happy.
I’ll introduce Caitlin formally soon as she’s coblogging on this site (she’s an artist as well for those of you who don’t already know her).
You and Caitlin have a beautiful daughter! I hope we see more pictures of your family outings!
gorgeous pic of you and caitlin. cutest couple ever :)
Kitesurfing sounds like a ton of fun! I havent even flown a kite in years, i really should with my son sometime. Glad to hear Caitlin will be joining on in on things! :)
Erin, Caitlin is NOT the mother of Shannon’s child.
Nice Tom Waits clip! I have to say though, as an avid cyclist, the wind is mostly my enemy. Unless its at my back, of course, haha.
:) I always loved flying kites. The other day I was out with my son trying to find one to buy. We ended up having to craft one ourselves which in a lot of ways was far more enjoyable and cost us a whole dollar something to buy. He’d never seen a kite before ( he’s 17mos old) and I’d never made a kite before so we were both surprised to see it fly up into the air, haha
A friend of mine is currently reading Heaven’s Breath by Lyall Watson. What he says about it sounds like this post. Either you’re reading it already, or you should be…
