The default setting makes jpg files which, by definition, are highly processed — they have to do the cosine transforms on the data you know. Canon has software you run on your PC to get a picture out of the raw binary.

But yeah, I see your point. The filtering step makes some assumptions and then whails away at the data and it can produce artifacts.

It sucks for anyone who notices the affect, but for anyone who doesn’t, all they see are “smoother” filters.

In something as advanced and niche as a 3d Camera right now, it’s a feature that should’ve been left to programs like Noise Ninja and those of us who know how to deal with that issue.
