I have a few friends who moved to Hawaii and back from upstate NY. I would say the reasons are pretty well contained in the article Shannon linked. One of them worked in the construction business and although a couple of the native Hawaiians he worked with befriended him, he said it was actually pretty scary walking into a convenience store and hearing people muttering “haolie” and cursing at him.

i dont recall any overt racism on my trips. but i do look like a mix of abunch of stuff. maybe they didnt know which bit to be racist against! hahaha

my GF is glowing white tho, i dont think she felt any racsim either. hmmm…

Ouch, Andrew. Apparently you drove through the wrong part of Buffalo. Every city has its rundown spots, but the part of Buffalo I live in certainly is not. And Hawaii would be a pretty long trip from all my family and friends and my good job, so I’ll stay here for now.

My sister in law laments the ability to move to Hawaii due to expense so I offerred up that we do have a couple of states with white sand beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, apparently the bible belt turns her off. Go figure.

It seems that if you were to paint on the bedroom wall it would rule out easily re-muraling. Contact paper, which is very similar to wallpaper, with a chalkboard-like surface can be found in many arts and crafts kinds of stores. That, and chalk, would allow for many successive re-muralings as mood and fancy dictate.

I do have a friend who managed to get a full ride scholarship and moved out to Hawaii. He ended up moving back. He said that the island was beautiful, but the culture was just too hostile, with a lot of overt racism.

ive spent some time in HI doing guest spots and such, and the local always warn me not to get “island fever” because its not all its talked up to be.

in a couple weeks, my friend is moving off HI to CA. he even has his own shop that is doing well. he has been complaining for years that its boring as hell, there are no punk shows and no one to inspire the art(he leaves the traditional stuff the masters).

I am plotting my move to Hawaii after I finish my degree…6 more classes to go after this semester and I make my escape. I went to Kauai & Oahu almost 2 years ago now and just can’t shake the place.

That is an amazing photo.

And I’ve also wondered the same thing many times about why more Americans don’t move to Hawaii. But I guess living there would get just as boring after a while … maybe. Somehow.

I drove through Buffalo for the first time last month. What an urban paradise. Nothing says great place to live like row-upon-row of identical, run-down war era housing.
